Matt-

I'm not exactly sure what the status of the Oracle support will be in future releases of Django. I'm thinking that if we publicize any discussion on the subject, and combine efforts on solidifying it, then we can help direct that path.

Now, about the issues you are having. Could you describe them? So far, I have been successful using the Django/Oracle combo with a rather large project at work, using a database that had already existed. In other words, the 'syncdb' support has not been tested by me. CRUD-related activities have been working fine with the latest patch I uploaded ( http://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/1990)

I know one of the setbacks for some of the core developers/committers is that they don't have an Oracle license to test with. The database I use at work is located on a Solaris machine, and I'm stuck doing development on a Windows hard-drive-encrypted laptop... so I use the Oracle InstantClient (along with the cx_Oracle module). http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html
In addition, I have used the Oracle Lite database for testing on my laptop: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/lite/index.html

So... I guess we need to figure out if the setbacks deal with the Django support or with the cx_Oracle module, and we can all go from there. I'd like to see some of the changes from the 0.95 patch applied to the trunk, but for more stability, we can work with the 0.95 release/patch for now and see if we can make everyone happy. Once we're solid there, we can move towards applying it to the trunk.

In addition, I'd really like to see you use Django at work. I have used many, many web frameworks over the past 5 years, in both Java and Python, and as of right now, I wouldn't use anything else BUT Django. It truly does make development much faster than anything else I've used/seen. And what else is great is that maybe we can get some Oracle advice from some guys who know it well, and really help drive more users towards Django.

Thanks for the email. I'm posting this discussion to the django-developers google group so that we can publicize this need and combine support from anyone interested.

Thanks,
Tom Zellman

Hi,

I apologize for writing out of the blue, but we're curious if you could give us an update on Oracle support in Django.  We're making some decisions at my company about frameworks, and we would *really* like to use Django, but not having Oracle is a showstopper.

We've applied your latest patch to 0.95, but many things still don't work.  We have some serious Oracle expertise here, and we're not afraid to write the code on our own, but would not want to compete or duplicate effort.

Can you tell us where things are at?  If we had moderate confidence Oracle would be officially supported within a few months, that would be good enough for us to choose Django for some internal projects.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Matt
