The problem of server and application level stats is that they are
fairly easy to implement and attractive, but they're hideously
inaccurate. First you have to ignore robot traffic, then you have to
accurately sessionise, then build the reporting interface, which must
be very powerful if it is to be useful. Basic stats might keep people
happy, but they won't actually help them run a better site.

I ran a (tiny) analytics startup for 18 months and I would definitely
conclude it makes much more sense to leave it to the big boys!
Accuracy is very difficult to test and verify and analytics as a whole
takes on a life of it's own compared to the work of developing the
application itself. This is a wheel that has been pretty well invented
already.
