I can't really claim to be a complete newbie, as I've spent a couple of days playing with Django, but I didn't find any problems at all with the __gte syntax. It might not be the most intuitive system, but after you've learned it, it makes sense. It''s also very easy to learn with the current documentation, so I fail to see the problem.
