Indeed -- I'm incredibly happy with the code, but I don't really have time for more explicit observations. I did this (not very well) about a month ago and didn't find much difference (about 1% penalty to unicode, which I think is well within the margin of error for my laptop). My test was pretty shitty, though, so I'd love to see someone with a better setup (and better stats chops) actually run some numbers.
