This is what I want to encourage students to do. If both the projects
and students are aware of their willingness then this will be more
likely to happen.

My idea is that mentors will be a first point of contact for a
participating student. They can help introduce them to the community
and answer any initial questions. I expect that their involvement will
fade over time as the student becomes part of the development
community. I imagine this will work best if the student is assigned a
mentor and an initial project at the same time. How does this contrast
with the GSoC experience?
