You don't close the ticket. You put "Refs" in the commit message and it puts the commit message in the ticket without closing. This is all described in contributing.txt. Then you can change the status to "fixed in a branch". I disagree that your commits would need to close (or ref) many tickets all at once. If that's the case, they aren't isolated enough commits. Too late now, but for at least the last couple of weeks, please "ref" the ticket numbers in the commits that address them.
