It's never too soon to scheme and plan :-) Two suggestions leap to mind: Firsly, general triage and bugfixing is always on the todo list. It's not especially inspiring, but it is necessary, and it can be an easy way to get newcomers started. Secondly, anything on the GSoC list [1] that hasn't been accepted as a GSoC project. Many of those projects would benefit from having a couple of heads spend a few hours doing design work, then thrashing out a prototype in a caffeine fuelled frenzy. As you've noted, there will be several of the core team (including myself) at the sprints who will be keen to give guidance and break design deadlocks.
