I knew about the pony.

My point is that a strong and recognizable visual element like that one, will 
help give the site some character. People might say: "just search for python 
web framework, it's the site with the flying pony". After some time everything 
related to django will include the pony. Some of it already is.

The pony is perfect because the community already knows it, uses it and likes 
it. I don't think it will scare away enterprise adoption, but I might be wrong. 
I don't know the whole back story on how, who and when the pony was chosen.

So, yeah we don't have to use the pony but I think it will be fighting against 
what has already been happening naturally. 

We have the opportunity to embrace and officialize the mascot that was chosen 
organically by the community.
