Closing the loop for anyone who finds this message and doesn't click 
through to the ticket:

It seems to be a locale problem. Cleaned up everything (removed 
/usr/local/var/postgres), installed postgres again with export 
LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8; export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 and it worked.
