This is actually a Python 2.3 bug. I'll extract out the two or three
useful parts of this patch; I can see where the explicit casting to
unicode is necessary.
After I commit the change, please check that it works for you. I won't be
applying the patch unmodified, because you are making a bunch of unneeded
changes as well. So double-checking my work will be good.
