I think the OP isn't talking about the Python runtime gettext support but
about the GNU gettext utilities (xgettext, msgfmt) used by the
{{{manage.py makemessages/compilemessages}}} commands.
We could copy some info from the "Tools" section of the wiki:Localization
wikipage.
