I believe I'm experiencing a similar problem. One thing that puzzles me is that the CPU usage remains very low while this slow (read: intensive) operation is carried out. On my development machine, neither the Python process or MySQL exceed 5% utilization. Does anyone have any idea why that may be? The situation is the same on both the dev server and through Apache.
