For posterity, I should point out that Graham's suggestion did indeed work and the final set of problems stemmed from my django app code. I had copied over some old code from my development environment to the production server, but the dev server was running an older version of django so the code required some updates.
A thousand thanks to Graham for helping iron out the configuration kinks and to Karen for reminding me to go back to basics and use Debug.
