I just threw the whole thing in the trash and started over and am putting it back together incrementally. It's not a small app, but it gave me a chance to restructure the few things that weren't already that way into reusable apps, and to make sure all my constructs are 1.2. This app has been dragged kicking and screaming all the way from 0.9x so I guess it was time. So far so good; if I can nail down the troublemaker I'll report back. Thanks!
