drilling in the gulf would probably pose a greater ecological threat than drilling in the Alaskan frontier.
the gulf of Mexico is extremely close to the Caribbean, which is important not only for its tourist acclaim, but for the wealth of biological diversity that LIVEs in the Caribbean reef. aside from providing a home for the pretty fish that we all love to look, coral play a significant role in reclaiming a large percentage of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
some friends of mine have a salt water tank and it is a pain in the ass for them to keep everything balanced and alive because the coral system is delicate and extremely environmentally sensitive. that is small scale compared to an entire reef system. any potential mishap in offshore oil drilling could wreak some a serious detrimental compromise to the ecosystem that includes both the gulf and neighboring reef system. considering that coral takes 200-300 years to regenerate, the results would be devastating.
what we are dealing with is a cycle of dependent negative feedback. we are addicted to oil, and we increase the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. the last thing we need to do is to potentially threaten a delicate system that works to reduce our atmospheric carbon dioxide production!
driving is a privilege. really if you think about it, the only reason we have a system of roads that we take for granted was because during our post WW II economic boom president Eisenhower promoted an interstate system to accelerate a rapidly growing consumer culture.
rather than looking for stockpiling oil and bullying nations that stockpile it from us, we ALL need to take a concerted effort to consume less oil. walk, bike and use public transit whenever you can. and consume less too! everything you buy is delivered via truck!
peace to all who will receive,
anthony
