That's what Postfix does, OpenLDAP does the same ... obviously Sendmail 
doesn't ...

The milter protocol for Postfix can be configured in main.cf (or with 
'-o' in master.cf). The standard for Postfix 2.4.5 is 2. One can see 
what Postfix is configured for by doing 'postconf milter_protocol'.
