But based on your original message, you're starting the filter with:

        -p local:/var/run/dkim-milter/dkim-milter.sock

The command line setting overrides the configuration file.

I have had a similar problem a while ago. I got help here for which I am thankful.

I set

milterdkim_enable="YES"
milterdkim_socket="inet:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

in /etc/rc.conf (FreeBSD) and that (besides editing the conf file) did the trick for me.
