john, you are quite right. I was being foolish.

here are the real dns records for intelli-shop.com.

dig txt _dmarc.sb.intelli-shop.com
...
;; ANSWER SECTION:
_dmarc.sb.intelli-shop.com. 3600 IN     TXT     "v=DMARC1\;
p=none\;rua=mailto:[email protected]\; fo=0\;
adkim=r\; aspf=r\;sp=none"

dig txt intelli-shop.com._report._dmarc.sbgw.sassieblaster.com.
...
;; ANSWER SECTION:
intelli-shop.com._report._dmarc.sbgw.sassieblaster.com. 300 IN TXT "v=DMARC1"

dig txt sbintelli-shopcom._domainkey.sb.intelli-shop.com
...
;; ANSWER SECTION:
sbintelli-shopcom._domainkey.sb.intelli-shop.com. 3600 IN TXT "v=DKIM1\;
k=rsa\;
p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCVqmGSAaZ3KWt3bT+xj8C60Yk2Ynvaw9fglfxoeAZ/n9B6WVHde45HOIOSrNuP6Fq86qMjO+3nSc5AhtbBiCGE8Fh4d7ehJtyRQ+3IN1V6aAolJEx0Zf/eh2YS0qQ3QpK8SE5zyT2tv40+b7xCnMnVXhm+ClF5JV8/WnaDKS/zIQIDAQAB"

thanks to the feedback I got earlier, it sounds like I need to address all the
emails as From: [email protected] and have the client configure their
mailserver to alias sb.intelli-shop.com to intelli-shop.com.

other bits of advice or highlighting any failures in my implementation would be
welcome. I'll take a stab at clarifying the docs for third party senders if
anyone is interested.
