well, in principle i think they're a great idea, particularly for starting out with as you can try different synths and effects without having to buy loads of outboard kit, but i'm constantly annoyed with the interface which is a perfect example of trying to be too flash without working in a consistent way or useful way (it has got better with v3 admittedly). most of the synths you get with it are pretty weak sounding, mainly i suspect because they dont have all the effects that synths like the virus (etc) has built in - like delay, overdrive, phaser, chorus, unison. you get modules that do most of these, but you have to spend time wiring it all up and even then you only get a cpl of voices of polyphony with a v1 card, but with the virus that isnt a problem at all - i can run a whole track off it. the bundled effects have all been pretty weak as well (they're apparently a lot better with v3) particularly ones that use a lot of memory (such as delay and reverb) as the pulsar doesnt have any real on board ram so has to use normal system ram over the pci bus.
i'm not trying to turn this into a hw/sw debate as sw synths are catching up (and with things like the absynth even surpassing) but i've achieved much better sounds with a virus than i did with any the pulsar synths and effects. it just hasnt lived up to its promises imo. but on the other hand, my mate who bought his pulsar2 after me really rates his, particularly the John Bowen synths which he says give as nice pad sounds as any hw synth, *(and also some of the 3rd party effects). but he still has to sample stuff off to his emu6400 ultra as he can only run them with one or two voices as they're so dsp intensive. i might not ditch the pulsar tho as i still use it for adat connectivity and maybe i will play with some of the new synths more when i get time... ph. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Lankester" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2001 11:06 AM Subject: [dnb-prod] Re: Logic 4.8.1 > I've not yet found someone with a creamware card who is even half happy with > it, let alone lovin' it! > My mates had a powersampler card for a while and they never got it to work > properly either...
