i've been using hardware for years, and it took me a while to get into the
software thing. the first bit of software to really impress me was Reaktor.
I love the organic feel it has, and the sonic possibilities are pretty
impressive. But at the end of the day, it's just a synth, albeit a damn cool
one, and it's got it's limitations.

I got hold of Reason a few weeks ago, and have spent most of those weeks
watching the dust pile up on my hardware. I've done what i feel are my best
3 tracks to date, 2 of which ('third out' and 'fourth out') were done 100%
in software. Using Reason to lay down the instruments, adding vocals in
Acid, then audio mastering in Cubase and Cool Edit.

It's so much faster working in Reason, you save so much time by not having
to fuck about with lcd-based editing, locating samples (my emu zip disks
just aren't organized as well as my pc audio drive) setting up presets etc,
like vincel said. And the analog feel is great. everything is just there.

The fx in Reason aren't good enough to use it on it's own, and there's still
plenty of room for more instrument versatility (if they make some kind of
Reaktor/Reason hybrid beast with Emu filter plug ins it would be a step in
the right direction) but for getting the bones of your track down fast, i
don't think there's anything better. I'm not selling my hardware yet though.

ez,
mattrick
