try one of those vocal removing plugins. they do the same thing. they work on the assumption that vocals are always panned center, so they phase cancel out the left and right channels agaisnt each other, which removes anything that was panned center. that's why those plugins make everything sound thin; they end up removing the bass and kick drum too. i think analogx has a free direct x one available.
