I just went thru that same process i my studio with my mac G4... sold a O1v
and lots of outboard gear and cables for a Delta 1010 to interface with Logic
Platinum... only 10 total inputs but since each track is being recorded
individually into the program it's not an issue. BTW, doesn't the 24i also
have a digital output pair as well? If you intend on resampling things thru
plug-ins back into your sampler, xtra outs are important...
I noticed there is a fairly dramatic sound quality increase over the
O1v's convertors, less "hard" and cold sounding. I hear the MOTU ones are
sweet as well.
The flexibilty this type of system gives you over hardware is great. I
spent so much time patching and repatching my setup for each song that I
could never go back to it again to remix it... everything would be going to a
new destination. With the Logic setup, its all recorded as tracks and
archived on CDr, so it can be remixed at any time... that alone makes it
worth the trouble to go software.
Incidentally, here's the hardware i kept-
Emu E-64
Access Virus rack
Yamaha AN1x
OASYS PCI card (technically hardware :) )
Electrix filter factory (sometimes ya just need to grab some knobs! Plus it
has a unique analog sound)
JoeMeek C2 (for drums)
FMR Audio RNC1773 (for it's "super-nice" mode)
Opcode Studio 4 (midi)
My partner has his own studio and is still mainly hardware, and has some
goodies like a Studio Electronics SE-1 and Sherman Filterbank that i don't
think software could ever replace :)
Latency truely sucks. I hate it too, and only the biggest buffer size
will work with my card... lots of lag. This is really only a big deal when
you're coming up with ideas tho, because once the basic midi data is in the
computer I pretty much deal with it on the piano-roll/event editor page.
I don't know about Cubase, but in Logic you can set up an environment
that lets you process ASIO inputs and mix them with already recorded tracks
AND softsynths simultaneously, which is what I required to sell my board
(took a while to get my head around tho!) I'm sure Cubase can do something
similar as well.
Well enough rambling.. good luck with your setup!
