Hi all,

I've been off work with the flu for a couple of days so I've kind of lost the
direction of this thread but for the record, here's my opinion on this:

You should ALWAYS record and process at the highest Sample/bit rate possible! Yes,
it's true that CDs are stamped at 44.1 and 16 bit but that doesn't mean that you won't
see an improvement in quality if you work at a higher rate and then resample the final
mixdown..

The Reason that Cds are at 44.1 is because when the CD format was specified it was
decided that the disc should be able to hold a specific piece of classical music (I
forget which one but possibly a Mozart piece).. The designers had concluded that a
sample rate of 48khz was the ideal for storing all the frequency data but when they
created a disc at 48 that was big enough to fit the mozart piece on it was too large
(physically).. So.... Instead of making the disc shorter and smaller they cut the
sample rate instead... Fair enough, you could say that they had the choice of cutting
the sample rate or making a shorter disc and they chose to cut the sample rate so it's
obviously not that important! But, at the end of the day if that's the case then why
are pro soundcards capable of much higher sample rates and why does the SBlive EMU APS
etc.. run at 48 internally? AND why is the new 24 bit cd audio format being developed?

Anyway, my point is this:

The Frequencies you lose by working at 44.1 are very high and so aren't that noticable
(They are mostly outside the range of the human ear) however, it is possible to
percieve these higher frequencies and they do effect the overall balance and sound...

The higher the bit rate and sample rate of a file, the better sound quality will be
produced when it is processed in software..

It's not really a pain to mix down to 44.1 from whatever you're working at is it? 1
minute of processing compared to days or weeks of production??

I seem to remember that somewhere down the line we were talking about using the 'what
u hear' funciton of the SBlive.. As I said in a previous post, the SBlive works
internally at 48khz but the 'what u hear' is 44.1.. (because it includes CD audio)..
If you record using this function then everything has to be resampled from the 48khz
that it's at when it's inside the card to 44.1 and then potentially back to 48 or
whatever is being outputted.. This is not good! And completely unneccesary...

Right, I'm losing the plot slightly coz I'm still groggy from the flu.. But I'll just
say that I work with Cubase set to VST32 Truetape on and sample rate of 48... I mix
that down, master and then resample at 44.1 for cd... I've tried using exactly the
same method but at 44.1 and to my ears the output is harsher and slightly distorted in
comparison..

At the end of the day though each to his own!

cheers,

Nick

the only time I can think of that you would want to convert to or from
48khz is when you are working with DAT, which is on its way out anyway
in my opinion.
