Dan,

Nope, not all CDRWs are IDE, there are also, SCSI and more recently external
Fire Wire one's too. You probably want to stick with IDE though, unless you
have a SCSI card in your PC, if you're not sure then the chances are, you
haven't!

Yep, you're correct in what you say about replacing you're current CD-ROM
drive!, it should be a straight swap!

As for spec, you *should* be able to put ANY IDE CDRW into your machine,
even if your your motherboard doesn't support the drives transfer rate,
it'll just run at the motherboards transfer rate.

Make sure you get a proper UDMA IDE cable, you can tell these because, they
have colour coded connectors and are more "dense" ie. more wires in the
ribbon cable than the old style IDE cable. You can even buy "shielded" IDE
cables now, with are round instead of flat and covered in a shielding
material. In theory this *should* help lessen residual noise from the drive
(cd drives being second only to cpu fans in the residual noise stakes),
although, I cant prove this! Oh and mines a funky yellow colour...errr..I'm
sad, leave me alone...
