good call, i'd hafta say it's the wavelengths of the bass frequencies too,
and setting everything up in an equilateral triangle is always recommended.
to give you a concrete idea, the wavelength of let's say a 100Hz wav (about
a G2) is close to 11.5 ft or 352 cm, so ideally you'd hafta stand 11.5 feet
away to hear it "properly," and that's not even "bass." having the monitors
very close to a back wall will boost the bass since you're getting
reflections off the back wall, but maybe this'll give you a colored sound,
so be real careful.
also, this just occured to me... what may sound like "good" bass response
might be kinda wrong. i'm sure we all like our bass real damn loud, and at
clubs, i've almost never seen a club run a flat eq, they usually boost the
bass by some obscene amount, and it's pretty easy to get used to a +18 or
+12db boost on the subs in a car (i sure did :).
so i'm sure the bass is there, but getting an accurate picture or getting a
"biased" picture that fits our expectations might be hard.
a site that helped me a lot was
http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html
maximize it to 1024x768, and they have a bunch of documents about
soundproofing and setting up studios and other crap. hopefully it'll help
you improve the sound of your room (after reading this site, i've made a
mental note to buy massive amounts of plywood). hope this helps.
