Not all DVD's are encoded with copy protection, but
most are.  If the signal is interrupted at all, it
causes the symptoms you mentioned, picure fade, audio
fade, etc.  There are some players out there where you
can record from DVD.  www.lik-sang.com 

Otherwise, just get a DVD-rom.  Then rip them all to
shit.  Yeah, word.
