Dunno!

I listened to the track but it's not really too easy to tell wether it's got the kind of sound I'm looking for coz a) I've only got headphones at work and b) I think you really need to have the track in high quality to be able to pick up on the kind of sound I'm looking for..

I realised shortly after asking the question that I need to provide some examples of tracks.. I'll dig around tonight and try and find some.. It's not so much the bass (instrument) sound I'm looking for as a kind of dynamic presence.. (Can't really explain it better without examples)..

Anyway, I'll shut up til I can quote some track names/artists...

cheers,

Nick

Is that the kind of sub you are talking about???

If so I can tell you how to get it.

I start with the Junglist VSTi preset Sub Test.

Then I change the sec Osc to a sine wav. Then in the VSTi I changed the Bass FX and attact. Ok now that is done, I used a lot of FX the get that sound. I used Fruity 7 band EQ preset to dance, then Fruity Compressor set to default. Then I used on the master channel the BUZZ FX adapter (load RYMIX stereo box pro) with the MAXBASS preset, then one more BUZZ FX adapter with Oomic Exsiter, Fruity 7 band EQ, and a Fruity Compressor on the Complete Master preset.

I have found that keeping your basslines in the c3 to c4 range helps a lot...

OK, so I can make subs that are almost how I want them but they still sound NOWHERE near as tight as a lot of tracks I pick up on Vinyl..

I'm talking about that specific type of bass where it's really punchy and just sounds like a wall of sound rather than a bassline..
I can make that type of sound but I can't control it enough to actually mix it with the other sounds...

Is it just a question of the right EQing and Compression?

At the moment I generally beef up the bass at around 90hz and then take out the mud around 250... Which gives a nice deep tone to it but it lacks the punch and clarity I'm looking for..

Anyone got any advice for this? Compression tips?

I think my problem may be more to do with attack and release settings than anything else.. Twiddling them seems to change the aspects of the sound that I want to correct but I can never seem to get it quite right..

Do people use distortion on these types of subs?

What waveforms? I tend to use a square mixed with something else but I've got a feeling that maybe I should be using sine waves and then processing them rather than starting with a square? ? Fook knows!!

I know that this is a pretty individual question as different people have different views.. Just thought I'd ask!

cheers,

Nick

p.s. Although I'm not exactly a mastering engineer I do practice home mastering sometimes using Izotope Ozone and it does sometimes sound like it might just be the mastering that gets that extra nice sound on the subs.. But I don't know for sure either way...
