haha... Yeah, you can make a tune using nothing but twisted samples..

Personally I tend (nowadays) to make the beats using individual hits directly on audio tracks in Cubase (using plenty automation) and then load other samples into a sampler (Halion or the ones in Reason)..

It's pretty easy to mix and blend the musical samples provided you get the right ones.. At the end of the day if you have an idea in your head of what it should sound like then it's just a question of finding a similar sort of sample and playing around with it..

As far as remixing existing tunes is concerned, I'd agree with everything already said.. Namely that you'll either need the original tracks (wavs) from the original producer or you'll need to be very patient and cunning in reverse engineering the full track.. (i.e. You're gonna need to do some major studio trickery to lift the sounds from the original recording.. I wouldn't bother personally..).. OR you could try to remake the track using your own samples/sounds (see above). ..

To be honest mate, if you've got ideas in your head for remixing tunes then you're probably best off trying to make something new..
It'll be less stressful all round and you'll probably end up with a better result.. If you could pull it off though, then fair play, I'd hire you myself!

cheers,

Nick
