The Carillon system cases are well designed from a noise level standpoint, but the machines themselves are poorly designed for actual performance.
When I was looking, a few months back, they were putting SDRAM memory in Pentium 4s and doing other 'cost cutting' measures. (This causes a P4 to perform worse than a comparable PIII system, since the CPU is choked by the slow memory. The only reason it's done? So that a manufacturer can put a 'Pentium 4' sticker on the box, without having to buy expensive memory. Since then, memory prices have come down, but I would assume that they are doing the same math for all their internal components. Besides, you can't upgrade it after tha fact). I called them, to find out what the internal components were, since they don't offer much in the way of details on their website. The motherboards they are using aren't particularly speedy, efficient, or otherwise impressive, and they are hardly offering the other latest stuff. At half the power and easily $1,000 over the competition, what are you paying for? If you know anything about computers, you are better off building your own system and purchase an iso-rack (or commandeer a closet - that's what I did :>). Then again, perhaps the extra money, and reduce speed, and lack of upgrade paths are worth it to you, if you don't ever want to open the box itself. bIz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Martin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 12:00 AM Subject: [dnb-prod] sound cards > I am looking at moving into pc-based recording and was wondering what > soundcards people would recommend.
