Your're missing the point. The issue is not gain (level) but rather dynamics. If you've already squashed the hell out of the tune, then there's not going to be enough headroom for the engineer to work with. Lowering the input gain is not going to bring those dynamics back.
And yes...engineers will frequenty ask for a clean mixdown that hasnt been compressed whatsoever. You want to get a nice loud master so you can cut those plates and play those CDRs but when your getting something on vinyl, best leave it to the pros. trust -----Original Message----- From: kevinacameron [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 3:07 PM To: Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List Subject: [dnb-prod] RE: mastering question thats retarded... why wouldnt they just lower the input gain? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 8:54 AM To: Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List Subject: [dnb-prod] RE: mastering question Just going at this from a different angle - we've been told by the labels we've signed to, never to master our tracks and leave enough headroom in the mix for the engineer. We've sent material before that has been too loud and they have asked for a quieter version !!!
