Your're missing the point.  The issue is not gain (level) but rather
dynamics.  If you've already squashed the hell out of the tune, then there's
not going to be enough headroom for the engineer to work with.   Lowering
the input gain is not going to bring those dynamics back.

And yes...engineers will frequenty ask for a clean mixdown that hasnt been
compressed whatsoever.  You want to get a nice loud master so you can cut
those plates and play those CDRs  but when your getting something on vinyl,
best leave it to the pros.

Just going at this from a different angle - we've been told by the labels
we've signed to,  never to master our tracks and leave enough headroom in
the mix for the engineer.

We've sent material before that has been too loud and they have asked for a
quieter version !!!
