I work in the same studio and after seeing what goes on I really don't think there is any point in trying to master stuff yourself - mastering is a whole discipline in itself, spend you time concetrating on writing engineering and mixing down and try to attend the mastering session to hear what they do with your tracks - that way you'll be able to see how you can improve your mixes before they go off to be mastered.

ps before anyone asks, no I can't get your tracks mastered for free - my brother only takes on work from people he knows personally, or through immedite friends, you got to draw the line somewhere, sorry :(

Establish a relationship with a professional mastering house - they can put your music through tens of thousands of dollars of outboard gear, and even more importantly, provide you with another set of ears to listen to your music, one that does nothing but listen to music all day.
