sorry for the dated response.. better late than never?

regarding the mackies being too bright, i agree, -but- you can reduce the treble by one or two levels right on the back of each speaker. i recently clicked mine down a notch and have noticed my mixes have started to come out a little more sharp as a result. i did the same with the bass too, which seems to be working out fairly well. i just wished i could get them spread out a bit. it would be nice to actually have some sense of space between the monitor and my ear but sometimes the room just doesn't allow eh?

peace,
jesse

You know actually,

Although Mackies are considered a standard when it comes to quality, I've
heard a lot of people say that the tweeters are just a tad too bright. This
is coming from several people i know who KNOW their shit, one of them being
Oscar at Turnstyle records (I cut all my dubs with this guy, and I hold his
opinion in very high regard).

Event 20/20s are very, very good and are also cheaper than Mackies.

Just to offer a dissenting opinion of course. hehe. but yeah I'd tend to
think that the more expensive mackies would be the better ones, whichever
ones those are.

good luck! but seriously, check out the 20/20s if you're still shopping
around. don't limit yourself to Mackies because of name alone. :)
