With my collection of boxes and my mixer, the track is usually pretty sorted for
overall compression, enhancement, EQ and levels by the time the mix is recorded, so I
guess i do find them useful. The Ultrafex always makes the mix shine and fatten up,
the compressor levels things out and gates background noise and the EQ is good for
tube warmth and making overall adjustments. I haven't found any of them to make a
detrimental effect (all very quiet when all levels are flat or bypassed), so I just
dial in the required flavour if needed.

By the time the audio is in the computer, I just use Cool Edit to top and tail the wav
file, fade intros and outros to silence, normalise to 99% of max level, roll off under
25hz (will increase this to around 40hz next time for a change) and limit the track
slightly to increase volume.

In fact I only used to use TRacks on fairly flat settings (no skin off my nose, as it
came from a list contributor and the update from Kazaa) to add some warmth and dither
down to 16bit44.1khz for burning to CD, so now that I have the UltraQ, theres not much
point. Haven't finished any tracks since i got it, so hadn't really thought about it
till now 8)

I find having boxes easier than relying on software too much. Its easier to adjust and
since my system is luckily pretty quiet with no noise to speak off, I've managed to
add box after box and reap the benefits without adding any extra fuzz.

Hmm...interesting. How do you find T Racks? I've never got on with it
really, its seems a bit heavy handed.

Have you you ever thought about backing off all that stuff and going a bit
more "minimal"? All those machines are going to add their own quirks to your
mix...just a thought :)

I guess it depends on the sound you're going for...
