that's right, it's just an effect like any other,
if you need it, use it, otherwise don't

the problem is that compression is the hardest effect to understand imo, so it's hard 
to
know where and how you should be using it

and then you keep hearing and reading about it on producer-related boards and you're
thinking "shit man, I've gotta start using some serious compression on my tracks man, 
no
wonder they suck if I ain't using it" :)
