*Most* DnB tunes made before 95/96 were made with an Atari an Akai (or
similarly basic setup) and maybe some keyboards. Infact, I'm pretty sure
some, if not all of Goldies first album (definatley the 4Hero produced
tracks, not sure about Robs tracks) was with an Atari running Cubase
(there's an old DnB/Jungle Future Music article circa 96 which described the
process).
>From memory, Dillinjas first tunes were made with a Cheetah sampler (2
second sampling time, expandable to 8 seconds) and an Atari. Then he started
using an Akai after meeting Lemon D.
Loads of references to old skool Jungle/DnB on the net.

Hey IIIIIIIIIIIIII

Nice post!
Do you know the names of any tunes that were made like that?
If i have any of them at home it would be cool to give them a listen.

I agree that the old skool tunes had a certain sound to them that still
sounds great today (i mean i still pick up old Crystl/4hero stuff off ebay
and love them), but on the other hand, i actually like the learning curve
sometimes... Its like when i first started, it took me ages to learn how to
sample and use a sequencer cos no-one else i knew was interested, but it was
worth it and its a good feeling. I like combining trying to make a rolling
tune with making it sound good for my own satisfaction not really for anyone
elses.

If i could make my tunes sound like the last Big Bud album it would be great
but even tho i know they probably won't for a long time, it doesnt meant
that i'll just give up trying. Its like making a cake and not icing it 8)

Laters
Dan

WHAT, come here for a slap

Atari ST + Cubase, not that kiddie mod 4 track shite games machine.

Too many toys in the digital domain today, someone posted that they use
about 5 stages of compression in the mix, including multiband, lol.

We never worried about making tunes, we knew what the tune was going to be
like before turning on the Atari. Now you have all the warez in the world at
your p2p fingertips but you don't know what to do with it all. Well you
could uninstall it all and just use a few tools then maybe you will focus
more on the tune and less on getting it to sound right.

I suppose I am "old skool", upto 95/96, most of the prod's I knew used Atari
ST, Cubase V2 (V3 crack was shite), Akai S950/1000 or the odd Emu sampler, a
mixer, if they were lucky some fx unit, and any keyboard that had midi out.
Akai sine tone for bass, loop for drums, stabs, pads and a few vocal
samples. Onto Dat, to the cutting room where compression was actively used
for the first and only time, any other compression was due to the analogue
domain and overloading the mixer channels, or to "nice it up".

If you want to stand out, be different.
