We alway compress the components on their own. The Kick / Snare / bass are always through different compression, and the output signalis routed to another channel on the desk for post-compression tweaking.
We find that makes it easier to get things to sit better in the mix. There was a really good piece on this in SOS from last month. Distorted minds had the studio SOS team in to help them with muddy bass and unwanted frequencies.
