Assuming that DNews is using the local sendmail as it's smtp server then
disabling sendmail would stop manager reports and posts to moderated
newsgroups being
sent.  It would also break any news-mail gateways you have setup using
http://netwinsite.com/dnews/tomail.htm.  However you can just configure
DNews to use an
alternative smtp server in newsfeeds.conf and you shouldn't have any
problems.

e.g. newsfeeds.conf

site me
        groups *
site news.smtp.server.ip
        smtp
