Sorry, turns out I didn't look at the pile hard enough to see the
'unread' at the end of it :-(
With the unread setting it puts items in 'uncached' groups into the
'unread' pile which can be small which
allows you to expire items in groups that no one reads fairly rapidly.
So that pile might not be getting used if you happen to have all your
newsgroups set cached.
