this is because the part buffer has to be 'very' fast, so it doesn't try
and fill in the gaps created by items that were complete, instead
it just cycles merrily thru from beginning to end. This does waste some
space but typically the size of the part buffer
isn't all that critical, whereas it's processing speed is.
