Possibly, try the 'nodns true' setting but please let me know if it does or 
doesn't
fix it as I wasn't aware of that problem with w2k.  If it doesn't fix it, 
send me dnews.log
covering the period when you connect and cpu use goes high.

Also you should try upgrading to
         ftp://ftp.netwinsite.com/pub/dnews/beta/dnews55b3.exe
