Oh, stupid me, I did a web search on 'snews' and found about a dozen things 
and since one was
a news client I just assumed that was what you were referring to :-)

Ok the answer is "sort of", only by using sslwrap or similar, this is 
described on http://netwinsite.com/dnews/recent.htm
so it can be done with a bit of fiddling.
