Hi, I've redirected your question to [EMAIL PROTECTED] so the 
experts can
give you an answer, but in brief, if you use the install program that comes 
with cwmail
it will give you a choice of upgrading templates or using existing ones (in 
which case you
don't get all new features of course)

And to be safe in terms of backups you should backup
         cwmail.exe, cmwail.ini
         The template directory tree (not just the template files, the 
entire tree)
         The workarea directory tree (if defind, if not defined then it's 
in the template directory)
