As a rule of thumb 99.9% of the feed is binaries, so the above calculations
is roughly:

         3*500gb, 1.5 tb
         23*1gb, 23gb
         Total 1.5tb

Dnews doesn't compress the data, but it can be selective in what it keeps
in such
a way as to greatly reduce how much space you need.

For example if you only keep complete multi part postings that can often double
how much you can keep. And blocking one or two offensive/illegal or
otherwise unwanted
binary groups can also greatly increase how much 'useful' data you can keep.

Also using 3 piles may give you much better retention, e.g.

         non binary 30 days
         most binaries 10 days
         high volume binaries. 2 days

Also, I would not buy disk for the future, disks get cheaper and faster
with time, so buy
them when you need them, just make sure you have somewhere to plug in an extra
one next year if you need it :-)

So I would start with 500-1tb and then do some careful tuning to make the most
of that storage, then see how things go.

Hope that helps, that's my suggestion anyway.
