Try this :
tellnews showgroup alt.binaries
(or whatever the group was exactly)
If it lists a bunch of items, then probably the problem is your news
client is being 'smart' and not showing you 'old' items. Try deleting
the group in your news client and re create it that might force it to
fetch the items again.
Do you mean
tellnews showcached "*"
shows no cached groups, if so set it manually:
tellnews cached alt.binaries 100
If you missed the number off originally it might have only stayed cached
for a single day.
IF none of that helps send us the output of
tellnews status
dnews.conf
newsfeeds.conf
expire.conf
tellnews showgroup problem.news.group
