That sounds odd, basically first examine dnews.log and see what errors are
reported when trying to read the items.
I don't really want to recommend a solution without knowing whats gone
wrong, for example
rebuild_index may help but it isn't really indicated by what you have
described.
It might be quickest if you could give us remote ssh access to examine the
system to
see whats wrong.
