Day-based expire rules are not very accurate. DNews always leaves one bucket file in each pile. This means if you do not fill a bucket, the items will not be expired. For full buckets to be removed, all items within the bucket must have passed their expiration date. If ipfw.* are low-volume groups, or if your bucket size is very large (to accommodate binary groups), then these items will remain in the spool much longer than the specified length of time. "tellnews showpiles" will give you an indication of how much space is being used for these messages. You should find it is smaller than the largest .itm files you will see in your spool directory. The only solution is to set the bucket size much smaller, but this will lead to dnews running out of bucket files on large systems. If you suspect the above is not the problem, please send us the output of the showpiles command, and dnews.conf.
