Hi,
Performance based on bucket size is difficult to quantify as it is dependant on many
factors such as caching. I'd be more concerned with issues such as fragmentation if
the drive is being used for other purposes.
If you wish to expire low-volume piles on a daily basis (days rule in expire.conf),
smaller buckets are required to ensure that at least one bucket is filled each day.
When you have large groups as well as small, use large buckets, meaning buckets with
'days' rules may not be removed after the number of days specified as they may not
have filled a bucket. The newest item in each bucket determines when the bucket will
be deleted.
By 'expire frequency' below, I'm referring to the period specified in expire.conf, not
the daily expire.
