Create a file called groups.txt in your DNews workarea containing a list of groups you require, one per line. E.g.
rec.humour netwin.dnews
The workarea is defined in dnews.conf located in /etc, or %windir%\system32 on Windows.
Add to dnews.conf -
nntp_feeder server.example.com * [username password] suck_file1 groups.txt update_at *0 *
Then,
tellnews reload tellnews update
You should then see a list of groups on your server soon thereafter. You need to either read the "Download in progress" message or cache the groups manually -
tellnews cached * 10
Within 10 minutes you will see articles appearing if everything is working as it should, or you can start it manually using tellnews update again.

We would like to use dnews to mirror a handful of smaller text and binary groups for our intranet. Because of the small size of those groups we would be abled to rely on a single "Suck-Feed".

Hi,
I could give various ways to configure this, but how to do it, if at all, really depends on what you wish to achieve.
Do you want a local copy of the groups for fast access/reduced bandwidth, or are you attempting to improve completion by sourcing news
from multiple sources?
If you can give us an overview of your goals we'll be able to give you more detailed information on configuring DNews.
