dear Jochen, tl;dr - just like Debian does, we do recommend using Raspian on rpi1 boards version 1 to take full advantage of their rather strange architecture.

I was indeed surprised to read an rpi1 is 'armhf' platform. Thanks Katolaz and others for clarifying, did recall some discussion about this in the past but lacked the details.
